Staying Healthy While Traveling

We are getting ready to head out of town for some international travel- can’t wait! YAY! But….traveling with an infant….oh man. I’ve never been so prepared in my life. The biggest challenge I have ahead is; how, do we not get sick on the airplane and in our case the cruise line. So, without further ado…here are a few things that I am doing to get us in tip top shape to travel.

1. Thieves- I’ve mentioned it a million times- I am taking my diffuser for the room, rubbing thieves on a cotton ball to put with us on the plane and carrying our little 5 ml bottle with us for airplane travel. We also use the thieves toothpaste so we are getting a daily dose when brushing our teeth as well.

2. Probiotics- we have all beefed up on these. I am taking an extra dose a day as well as giving E some daily with his solids. These are awesome- found a liquid form at Sprouts I love that is mixed with coconut water and uses Stevia so it doesn’t raise your blood sugar levels. So many great things about this product- and the best part is it’s $10 for 30 servings! We are raising our intake because the two biggest areas of susceptibility are our mucous membranes and our gut. Increasing the good bacteria in our gut; raises our ability to fight off infections.

3. Vitamin C- we are increasing our vit. C a few days before we leave so that we have adequate amounts to fight off infection while we are away- we will continue taking this while gone and then back off (other than what is in our daily supplements) so that when sick it is more effective

4. Eating Healthy- While we are not perfect we are trying to stay away from excess sugar and eat clean fruits, veggies, and proteins- giving our bodies the best ability to fight off whatever we may encounter

There are so many things you can do to keep you and your loved ones healthy. It does not guarantee we will not get sick- but hopefully whatever germs we run into will be short lived if any since our bodies are in best working condition before leaving. As far as traveling with a baby, the best thing you can do if nurse. If you’re baby is still nursing that is the biggest dose of antibodies they can get every few hours. Honestly, we should be more worried about ourselves than  them; as they have this amazing God-given immune booster every few hours. A friend recently told me that when we kiss our babies hands our body develops the antibodies to fight off whatever germs are on their hands. Amazing.

So if traveling here are a few things you can do to get your bodies in tip top shape to fight off all of those germs. But don’t let it consume you. Do what you can and then leave the rest up to God and enjoy your time away!

You’ve heard me say this a million times. You can’t just do one thing and expect it to work. We are holistic people and keeping ourselves healthy requires many different things. So take the plung and begin the journey to keeping you and your family healthy!

A Little Catch Up…

Sorry I’ve been so quiet this month..you know how it gets..crazy. 🙂 But I sure am excited about the new things that are happening. I have been mulling over doing some sort of class series for a while. My biggest passion in life is focused on helping people take charge of their families health. Know what you’re doing, and why. It’s part of my calling as a mom and wife and I love empowering people to do that same. Through some encouragement of some lovely ladies in my life I am going to move forward in this calling. I hope to cover a wide variety of topics that could be helpful. Most of these will be in home classes that seek to answer personalized questions and health issues; however, I want to make these available via video as well so that you in the blog-a-sphere can benefit as well.

I actually held my first class in home last week. I recorded this little video about what we talked about. I love oils, and while they will not be the only thing we talk about I wanted to make the information available to all of you as well! This is in no way a marketing ploy- I really believe in sharing what I use for me and my family to stay healthy; and if it works for you- awesome. If not, take the info and keep moving. Thank you for sharing in the journey with me towards health and wellness!

Para What?? Phthalates???

Parabens….Phthalates…..What in the world are these? And why does it feel like everything from soap to broccoli has a warning label about them these days. But really. I was curious, what the heck is a paraben and why do I care that it’s not in my shampoo. Same with Phthalates. I have made the mistake of assuming that because it is allowed in products by the FDA, it’s safe…right? Wrong. Really wrong.

My very elementary study of these two different compounds leave me yet again dumbfounded by the lack of caution and care free attitude of those who are supposed to be looking out for us and our families. I have just determined that in this life it is my responsibility to take control of my families health (after God of course). But in order to do that apparently I need to read my shampoo label now too.

So what are these things. The basics- parabens are a preservative that has been used in everything from toothpaste, to make-up, pharmaceuticals, and even as a food additive. Problem- we don’t know enough about them. Some studies suggest these chemical compounds could be related to certain growths found in breast cancer; assuming that some topical application resulted in the growth of these parabens in the cancer tumor. Also, there is a pool of research that suggests that parabens could be involved in the disruption of the endocrine system and even mimic estrogen. For those unfamiliar with the role of estrogen- hormones mess with every system of the body (the reason I do not believe in hormonal birth control- that’s for another day) and can result in long term impacts in multiple health systems in the body.

Phthalates are further along in research and some European countries have already banned certain phthalates from use in all products. Unfortunately it seems like Europe is always ahead of the US in this regard- so we would do well to follow suit. The down and dirty. Phthalates are chemical structure used to make plastic a little more pliable. It is also used in make-ups, children’s toys, cleaning agents, and the list could go on forever. Basically it’s in everything. It would be humanly impossible to stay away from it completely- but there are things we can do to minimize our exposure. The problem- The US Health Board has said that most likely these will be deemed as human carcinogens. (Cancer causing agents) A study in Bulgaria showed that children and infants were at the greatest risk. One study even showed a decrease in the mental and intellectual properties of children when exposed in utero to these chemicals.

So the question becomes- why are these things allowed in and around our families? What can I do about it? One of the above studies is similar to our last topic about safer cleaning practices. Children who were in homes where polishing agents were used had a great concentration of phthalates in their urine, than those whose homes did not use such polishing materials. This and many more I’m sure, points to our need to think through things we expose our children to. We and our families can’t live in a box. But we can do what we can at home to lower the rates and exposures to such harmful chemicals.

So the bottom line…read the labels. Manufactures know that once the consumer is informed they will begin to look for labels that say no parabens or phthalates. Now the next time you see that you can decide whether or not the dollar more is worth the exposure and risk or not.
